CoinStats Hack Affects 1,590 Wallets
Last week, the popular crypto-tracking platform CoinStats was hacked, affecting 1,590 wallets.
After temporarily shutting down over the weekend, some of the platform’s features are now back online.
The full extent of the breach is not yet known, but CoinStats intends to reveal more information in the coming days.
The Incident
The company posted about the breach on June 22nd, stating: “We are currently experiencing a security incident affecting wallets created directly within CoinStats.”
Not all of their users relied on CoinStats for wallet creation, however. Most, including one of our teammates here at FIV Media, only used CoinStats to keep track of their external wallets.
So, could these users be affected as well? Thankfully, CoinStats further reassured them in the second part of its post: “This does not impact externally connected wallets.”
Important Updates
On the same day, the company wrote that it was able to mitigate the attack. The platform was shut down over the weekend for further investigation.
“The attack has been mitigated, and we have temporarily shut down the application to isolate the security incident.“
CoinStats shared several important updates during this time, including a list of all the compromised wallets.
- Externally connected wallets and centralized exchange accounts were not affected.
- Approximately 1.3% of users were affected, totaling 1,590 wallets.
- Affected users should move their funds using their exported keys.
If you or someone you know ever interacted with this platform, you can find the official list of affected wallet addresses here.
Back Online
On Monday, June 24th, CoinStats released a statement verifying their platform is “back online.” Transactions, charts, and the portfolio sync features were available shortly after.
Not all functionalities were immediately restored, however, and some are yet to fully recover: “We're slowly activating them to ensure a smooth and stable experience for everyone.”
The company also wrote that it plans to release in-depth details about the incident soon. This will hopefully bring some clarity for the victims affected by the security breach.
